For years, fans of AEW have called for a women's tag team division, and that dream is now a reality. On the September 24th episode of Dynamite, AEW President Tony Khan unveiled the new AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship, announcing that the inaugural champions will be crowned in a tournament. This marks a new horizon for the women's roster, creating a fresh landscape for new pairings and feuds.
This is a chance to create new teams, highlighting talent who may not always be in the singles title picture. With that in mind, here are seven teams of wrestlers who aren't currently partners but should form to chase the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship.
1. Mercedes Moné & Nyla Rose
This would be a combination of star power and brute power. Mercedes Moné brings global stardom, while Nyla Rose provides destruction. This pairing works perfectly, where Moné can give her arrogant and dismissive promos, always knowing that she will have Rose to back her up. The clash of Moné's "CEO" confidence and Rose's fierce, no-nonsense attitude would bring them a lot of attention from day one. Their offense could include Nyla Rose delivering a Beast Bomb, followed by Moné hitting a Statement Maker for the win.
2. Jamie Hayter & Riho
While Riho is lightning quick, agile, and resilient, Jamie Hayter is serious and intense in the ring, very familiar with the hard-hitting Japanese wrestling style and working with Japanese talent from her two years wrestling for Stardom in Japan, even being a part of the Oedo Tai faction and winning the Goddesses Of Stardom Championship. As a team, Hayter could utilize her aggressive offense, followed by Riho capitalizing with high-flying maneuvers. Their finisher could be a fluid combination where Riho hits a 619 to stun the opponent, and Hayter follows with a devastating serving of Hayterade for the pin.
3. Thunder Rosa & Willow Nightingale
Thunder Rosa & Willow Nightingale are fan favorites who know how to connect with an audience. Rosa would add a hot-blooded, lucha libre-influenced style, and Nightingale would bring boundless energy. They would have an instant and organic connection with the crowd and would be one of the top face teams, simultaneously displaying pure fighting spirit ("Fighting Spirit" could even be the team name) and positive vibes. Rosa & Nightingale could even use a synchronized finisher like a double-team facebuster to put down their opponents.
4. Emi Sakura & Red Velvet
This could be a classic mentor-student pairing with a lot of potential. As ROH Women's World Television Champion, Red Velvet has already shown her capabilities as a singles wrestler. Meanwhile, Emi Sakura has already established herself as a legend during her career in Japan, her championship reigns including the JWP Tag Team Championship and Daily Sports Women's Tag Team Championship. Along with having a greatly successful career as a wrestler, Sakura is also an accomplished trainer- she has been responsible for launching the careers of over 40 wrestlers. As a highly respected veteran with a deep, masterful understanding of tag team psychology, Sakura could guide the match's flow and manage the in-ring strategy, while Velvet provides the energetic bursts of offense and athleticism. This team would offer a clear dynamic that could show Velvet growing under Sakura's tutelage, and perhaps even becoming a teacher vs. student situation down the line.
5. Yuka Sakazaki & Queen Aminata
Yuka Sakazaki and Queen Aminata have already teamed together once in 2024, and they would be a tag team defined by an energetic clash of their distinct wrestling styles. Sakazaki is high-flying and quick, while many AEW fans consider Aminata to be one of the best strikers in the promotion. This combination and seamless transition between aerial and grounded wrestling styles would display two different forms of athleticism, merging into one cohesive and dynamic unit that would instantly stand out in the division and have something for everyone.
6. Kamille & Lady Frost
This pairing would be an immediate visual contrast that tells a story. Kamille is a powerful and imposing force, while Lady Frost is a high-flying competitor with a unique, aerial offense. Kamille would serve as the immovable object, absorbing punishment and delivering power moves, while Frost uses her agility to deliver aerial attacks.
7. Rachael Ellering & Leila Grey
Rachael Ellering has a world tag championship on her resume, and is actively looking to bring her tag team expertise to the AEW women's tag team scene. Meanwhile, Leila Grey, who was always on the winning end of a tag team match when she was a member of the Baddies faction, is currently without a tag team partner and has expressed interest in competing for the AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship. They are what each other needs, and together Ellering & Grey would form a team that would be a tough challenge for all opponents.
The creation of the AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship is a huge step forward for the company. These hypothetical teams represent just a small fraction of the talent available to build a strong division. It will be exciting to see which pairings ultimately form and which teams will make history by becoming the inaugural champions. Plus, it will draw in a diverse and enthusiastic fanbase, and TBS/TNT will likely be pleased. I've learned firsthand that networks are actively looking for engaging and high-quality female-focused content to captivate their viewers that will deliver viewership & excitement- and recent data shows a clear upward trend in audience engagement for it. The appetite is there, and the platform is waiting, and AEW has an opportunity to showcase its female talent like never before. Here are a few ways AEW could structure the tournament that will decide which team will be the first to hold the gold, in ways that would maximize drama and excitement.
The 16-Team Grand Prix: Given the depth of the AEW roster (including talent primarily seen in ROH), and talent from CMLL that may be involved due to AEW's partnership with the company, a large, multi-week, single-elimination tournament would establish immediate prestige. Running four matches a week across Dynamite and Collision would put the division in the spotlight and solidify 16 pairings immediately. This classic bracket format creates clear faces and heels and guarantees a feel-good moment for the eventual winners.
The Two-Block Round Robin: Borrowing from the Japanese wrestling style, a two-block, round-robin tournament (like Stardom's Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League) would be compelling. Eight teams would be split into two blocks of four, with teams earning points for wins. The winners of Block A and Block B would then face off in a main event final for the title. This guarantees more matches for every team, showcases endurance, and builds anticipation for the final. Furthermore, the block format creates intensified drama on the last night of competition, where time-limit draws and the points earned make multiple teams mathematically eligible for the final. This style rewards consistency, giving every participating team multiple meaningful matches and establishing a clear standing based on performance, not primarily luck of the draw.
The Wild Card/Casino Qualifier: A more dramatic scenario would involve a large-scale Casino Tag Team Battle Royale where the final two teams remaining earn a spot in the final championship match, perhaps against two pre-selected teams (like a faction pairing and a top international team). The two pre-selected teams would add credibility to the final, having earned a first-round bye or a special seed due to their established status, while the Battle Royale guarantees chaos and an unpredictable outcome, allowing an entirely new or unexpected pairing to turn things upside down. This format maximizes the drama of a single-night main event, delivering a high-stakes championship clash after the qualifying match. This allows for unexpected pairings and highlights the "anything can happen" nature of AEW, leading to a single, important deciding match.
