The wrestling industry, always evolving, will see its relationship with social media deepen and diversify in the coming years. Emerging trends and technologies are set to reshape fan engagement, storytelling, and even the business of professional wrestling. Here's a glimpse into the potential future:
1. Immersive Experiences with VR/AR Integration:
Virtual Meet-and-Greets: VR will allow fans to experience truly immersive meet-and-greets with wrestlers, transcending geographical limitations. Currently, wrestlers use Twitch to interact with fans in real-time and maintain continuous, personal engagement. The wrestlers include Adam Cole, Dakota Kai (now known as Charlie), and Michin.
AR Overlays During Live Events: AR overlays will provide real-time stats, match analysis, and interactive elements during live events, enhancing the viewing experience. WWE has already heavily invested in virtual production in their studios to create flexible content for broadcasts that are more immersive and engaging. In 2024, the company launched a state-of-the-art 30,040-square-foot facility in Stamford, Connecticut. The new headquarters features a specialized virtual production stage (Studio 3) utilizing Sony’s Crystal LED VERONA screens and Disguise technology.
Virtual Reality Arenas: Fans will be able to attend virtual wrestling events, interacting with other fans and experiencing the thrill of the live show from the comfort of their homes. This is already in progress- In January 2025, WWE announced a multi-year partnership with global technology company Cosm to begin bringing WWE Premium Live Events to fans in Shared Reality at Cosm's experiential venues.
Shared Reality is a cutting-edge form of immersive entertainment that blends digital and physical elements to create a shared experience in a physical space. Unlike VR, which typically involves a solitary experience using a headset, Shared Reality is designed to be enjoyed with others in a shared environment, bridging the gap between home viewing and live attendance. This means fans at Cosm locations could feel like they're ringside at major events like WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, and Elimination Chamber, even if the event is taking place thousands of miles away. Cosm's technology utilizes large-scale 87-foot-diameter 12K+ LED domes that surround the audience, creating a sense of being transported to another location.
2. Decentralized Social Media and Blockchain Integration:
Blockchain-Verified Content: Blockchain technology will be used to verify the authenticity of wrestling content, combating misinformation and piracy.
A More Sustainable Environment for Wrestlers:: Blockchain can provide tools for wrestlers to track their performance metrics, build their brand, and connect with fans directly. For example, wrestlers could use blockchain-based platforms to create digital collectibles, engage with fans through social media, or analyze their match data. By utilizing these interactive features, wrestlers can create memorable experiences for their fans and foster stronger connections with their fanbase.
3. AI-Powered Personalization and Engagement:
AI-Generated Content: AI will analyze a fan's social media behavior & activity and will be used to generate personalized content for fans that they're most likely to enjoy, such as match highlights, news, and exclusive content just for them.
AI-Driven Chatbots: AI-powered chatbots will answer fan questions and facilitate interactions.
Sentiment Analysis: Promotions will use AI to analyze fan sentiment on social media, providing real-time insights into audience reactions and preferences.
Human-led strategy: AI will help manage social media accounts and schedule posts, but human creativity will still be needed to grow a wrestling promotion's fanbase.
4. Increased Focus on Short-Form Video and Interactive Content:
TikTok Dominance: Short-form video platforms like TikTok will continue to be essential for reaching younger audiences and creating viral moments.
Gamified Social Media Experiences: Promotions will create gamified social media experiences, rewarding fans for their engagement and participation.
5. The Resurgence of Dedicated Forums:
While social media platforms are increasing in activity, there is a distinct, well-documented shift where users are leaving to move toward specialized spaces, and I predict that their numbers will increase notably. Many of these forums are dedicated to specific promotions (such as WWE, AEW, and WOW), as well as puroresu, lucha libre, and independent scenes. Not only will this be enjoyable for fans, but it will be a benefit to wrestlers as well, making it easier for them to reach their core audience.
6. Online Barriers Between Independent Wrestlers and Major Stars Will Vanish:
Usually, major stars use higher-definition, more professional lighting and editing when creating videos. However, there are now AI tools ("AI Agents") available that talent can use to act as their own production studio, allowing them to release high-end vignettes in minutes. An independent wrestler can look like a global superstar on social media. Here are the most popular AI tools that can be used by independent wrestlers for vignettes and brand management:
Agent Opus: This will become one of the industry standards for independent talent. It is very wrestling-friendly, featuring specific workflows tailored for wrestling. Wrestlers can input a text script, and the tool generates a broadcast-ready hype video. It can even include wrestling-specific cinematic motion graphics, arena-style lighting, overlays similar to ones seen on pro-wrestling programs, and announcer-style narration that mimics the intensity of a major event promo. Also, it understands pro-wrestling situations like heel turns, match announcements, and championship reveals. Agent Opus can also be useful for promotions, for creating feud recaps with pro-style graphics and voices, as well as auto-editing a full match into highlights. Agent Opus videos are social-ready for TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn.
Runway Gen-4.5 & Luma Dream Machine: These state-of-the-art video generators will become the go-to for wrestlers who want a cinematic or high-intensity feel. Runway Gen-4.5 offers advanced camera control- wrestlers can use it to create complex shots like a wrestler standing in a burning ring or a supernatural transformation (thanks to Runway-developed Generative Visual Effects) without any physical fire or visual effects budget, and keeping their attire and face identical across multiple generated scenes. Luma Dream Machine is popular for its realistic physics- it can be used to create B-roll footage of a character walking through stylized environments that look photorealistic but were generated entirely from a prompt.
HeyGen & Synthesia (The Digital Double Tools): These are the engines behind the digital double trend. Wrestlers can use HeyGen to record a promo in English and then use AI to excellently translate it into Japanese or Spanish, maintaining their original voice and lip-syncing perfectly. Synthesia allows talent to write out a script and use high-fidelity avatars to provide personalized match breakdowns for their Patreon supporters without having to get in front of a camera every day.
7. Enhanced E-commerce and Direct-to-Fan Sales:
Social Commerce Integration: Social media platforms will be integrated with e-commerce platforms, allowing fans to purchase merchandise and tickets directly through their social feeds.
Exclusive Digital Merchandise: NFT-based digital merchandise will become more prevalent, offering fans unique and collectible items.
Subscription-Based Content: Wrestlers and promotions will offer subscription-based content through platforms like Patreon or their own dedicated apps.
Social media has constantly evolved, and I predict that the future will be no different. By embracing emerging trends and technologies, wrestling promotions can create more appealing, immersive, and individualized experiences for fans around the world.
