Every October, American sports and entertainment properties face a sports overlap that includes the college football, the NFL, MLB postseason, and the start of the NBA and NHL seasons. Because fan attention and advertising dollars are stretched extremely thin, entertainment brands and television networks look for themed content in order to stand out as much as possible and maintain seasonal relevance. For professional wrestling, that theme is Halloween.
Over the past four decades, wrestling promotions in America have used Halloween-related events as a way to strengthen their brand by drawing more attention to their product, and that strategy has expanded beyond America as well. Here is a look at six examples of this.
1. 1985 Saturday Night's Main Event Halloween Celebration
In the United States in 1985, television was becoming more popular, and this helped to popularize sports entertainment and make it a household name. That year, WWE presented an episode of Saturday Night's Main Event that spotlighted Halloween, as WWE Superstars wore costumes and celebrated the holiday with a pie eating contest.
2. WCW Halloween Havoc (1989–2000)
WCW heavily relied on Halloween Havoc to anchor its autumn pay-per-view schedule. Over the course of its run, Halloween Havoc became one of WCW's most unique and recognized events, used to compete with WWE's PPV calendar. Pre-late 90s editions of Halloween Havoc featured Halloween-themed sets (including a smoke-filled cemetery and an archway resembling the entrance to a mausoleum), and promotional television commercials by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Beginning in 1996, WCW held it at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for five consecutive years. WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 drew a sellout crowd of 12,457 fans, and it was the second most purchased WCW pay-per-view that year, with the main event being Roddy Piper vs. "Hollywood" Hogan in a "Steel Cage" match.
3. OVW Hell Night (2015, 2023-present)
Originally held in October 2015 and then resumed in October 2023, OVW Hell Night draws pro-wrestling fans who are in the Halloween spirit. The promotion focuses on maintaining a strong local following and sense of community, along with creating a must-see live event experience at the historic Hotpoint Davis Arena in Louisville, Kentucky, as it showcases the stars of OVW.
4. VKF Halloween Havoc (2013, 2016-2021, 2025-present)
Halloween is also a popular holiday in Japan, where the Osaka-based VKF Pro Wrestling originally held a Halloween Havoc event in 2013, resumed having them from 2016 to 2021, and then the Halloween-themed event made its return last year. Fans are encouraged to come to Halloween Havoc in costume, which gives the event a Halloween party atmosphere while the wrestlers who live in Osaka and its surrounding area have an opportunity to showcase their talents.
5. NXT Halloween Havoc (2020-present)
Continuing the Halloween Havoc legacy that WCW began in 1989, WWE (who purchased WCW in 2001) revived Halloween Havoc in October 2020 as an NXT event. WCW was one the most popular sports-entertainment companies on the planet during the mid-to-late 1990s, and WWE leverages that powerful nostalgia and established brand recognition to draw long-time fans.
6. Deathmatch Downunder via Tiger Driver/Halloween (2025-present)
In Australia, Halloween is slowly gaining local popularity, where Deathmatch Downunder (DMDU) participates in the Halloween theme by partnering with heavy band Tiger Driver and Switchblade Productions for their "Halloween" entertainment event. Along with deathmatch wrestling, the event features bands, burlesque, and a live roaming podcast. The promotion joined the event for Halloween II in 2025 and will return this year for Halloween III. DMDU's involvement in this two-night event gives them an opportunity to reach audiences who might not typically seek out wrestling content (organic exposure that is valuable for brand building), while simultaneously introducing wrestling fans to other forms of entertainment.
Whether it's a television special, a pay-per-view, a local community-focused event, or a multi-genre showcase, wrestling promotions have proven that season-relevant entertainment is one of the most effective ways to stand out. By turning Halloween into an annual fixture, promotions across the globe convert seasonal curiosity into long-term brand equity and fan loyalty.
