Why Only Your Organic Google Search Traffic Is Declining

From early to late 2026, organic search traffic via Google has been declining for many websites, while traffic from other search engines has been increasing. Your automatic assumption might be that it's the result of a Google core update or that your website lost search authority. However, if your overall organic search numbers are climbing, the truth is that it's because the mechanics of search engine results pages (SERPs) have split.

Here is a breakdown of why this shift has happened, how to explore it in Google Search Console, and how to adapt your digital publishing strategy.

Google Filters Clicks

My 2025 article about the the history and future of WOW - Women Of Wrestling ranks on Page 1 of Google, and was endorsed by WOW on social media. However, the link to it on Google does not get as many clicks this year as it did last year- this is because Google has changed from being a portal that focused on sending users to external web pages, to an answer engine that puts responses on its own page.

For questions (for example, "What is the history of WOW - Women Of Wrestling?"), Google’s AI displays answers to them at the top of Google's search results page. Even though my article provides a comprehensive narrative presenting the WOW's detailed history, key figures, and broadcast milestones, a portion of searchers read Google AI's answer and don’t click on the link to my article.

If you have a webpage on Page 1 of a Google search result, it means that Google likely considers it invaluable quality content, and it might be better than its generic summary about the same subject. But even though you are receiving many impressions, Google tries to keep users inside its ecosystem, resulting in your link's click-through rate (CTR) not being as high as it was in the past.

Step-by-Step: How to Audit This in Google Search Console

You can pinpoint the exact URLs affected directly inside Google Search Console (GSC) using a comparison audit:

1. Set a Date Range Comparison: Go to the Performance section of your GSC. Click on More, and select Compare. I recommend creating a custom date range comparing a period this year to the exact same period of last year (your console keeps 16 months of historical data). This would account for seasonal fluctuations in search volume and isolate algorithm/SERP layout changes.

2. Filter for High Impression, Dropping-Click Pages: Select Pages and click on the Click Difference column to sort pages by the largest decline in traffic.

Other Search Engines Are Helping Growth

Although my CTR on Google has been impacted by AI Overviews, my organic search traffic continues to grow via search engines that prioritize directing users to external websites. Many people who use these search engines tend to be more interested in reading authoritative writing and original or deeply analytical content than something that was written by AI in a generalist style.

How to Adapt to Google’s Changes

Google significantly increased its prioritization of AI Overviews and conversational AI features in 2026, transforming them from experimental tools into the dominant core of its search experience, which has caused traditional links to be pushed further down the results pages and positioned like footnotes instead of primary destinations. Nonetheless, the fact remains that Google is the world's most used search engine, holding over 90% of the global search market share. While other search engines allow my organic search traffic to grow, Google is still my largest source of organic search traffic. Therefore, instead of focusing on capturing more traffic from other search engines, I think people who have platforms should adjust their execution to adapt to Google's changes as best they can.

Once again using my WOW - Women Of Wrestling article as an example, it includes videos. Although the article's content was enough for it to earn a Page 1 ranking, properly incorporating YouTube media gives my article a major ranking boost in Google's search results. Embedding a YouTube video can improve user engagement metrics (dwell time) and help Google better understand your content.

In addition, along with adapting to Google's changes, publishers should make a connection with their audiences via specialization. If you do, your audience won't only read an article when it appears in a search result- they will visit your platform directly because they will recognize your platform as the place to get what you provide.

A decrease in Google referral traffic while experiencing overall rising traffic via other search engines is proof that the search engine landscape has changed- it doesn't mean that your content is low quality. By specializing your content and adding video properly, you can adapt to these changes and keep your website relevant in the website traffic ecosystem.
