- Build Tension: When possible, create a sense of suspense and anticipation. Leave the audience wanting more and wondering what will happen next.
4. Deliver Nonverbal Communication
- Project Your Voice: Speak clearly and confidently. Use your voice to convey emotion and emphasize key points.
- Use Body Language: Use your body language to reinforce your message. If you are in the ring doing a solo promo at an event that is being televised/streamed, make the hard camera your main focus- otherwise, make the crowd your main focus. Use gestures and move with purpose.
- Connect with the Crowd: When you speak and move, keep in mind that you want your words to be heard and actions to be seen by everyone in the crowd, from the people in the first row to those in the last row. For that reason -although the idea of it may sound strange- your body language and facial expressions must be exaggerated: This is how you can connect with everyone in the venue, no matter where they are sitting. In addition, acknowledge the audience and engage with them- respond to their reactions and use their energy to fuel your performance: If you're a face doing a promo and the fans boo, lean into it (a wrestler attempting to force a crowd to cheer is usually unsuccessful); If you're a heel doing a promo, telling the fans to shut up will make them boo more.
5. End with a Purpose
- Leave a Lasting Impression: End your promo with a memorable line, a dramatic action, or a cliffhanger.
- Create Additional Anticipation: Hype an upcoming match or continue a feud verbally.
