A compelling wrestling promo can elevate a character, start a feud, and captivate an audience. It's about storytelling, character development, and connecting with the crowd. This guide will help you craft promos that leave a lasting impact.
1. Define Your Character and Goal
- Know Your Persona: Understand your character's motivations, personality, and backstory. What are their strengths, weaknesses, and goals?
- Establish Your Objective: What do you want to achieve with this promo? Are you hyping up a match, challenging another wrestler, or declaring dominance?
- Identify Your Target: Who are you speaking to? The audience, another wrestler, or both? Tailor your message depending on your target.
2. Craft a Strong Opening
- Grab Attention: Start with something that immediately grabs the audience's attention. This could be a bold statement, a revelation, or a dramatic entrance.
- Set the Tone: Establish the mood and atmosphere of your promo. Are you angry, confident, or vulnerable? Let your opening reflect your character's emotional state.
- Be Concise: Get to the point quickly and efficiently.
3. Develop Your Message
- Tell a Story: Use your promo to tell a compelling story. This could involve your character's history, their feud with another wrestler, or their goals for the future.
- Use Expressive Language: Paint a picture with your words- your goal should be to want the audience to visualize your character's thoughts and feelings as clearly as you do.
- Acknowledge History: Reference past moments or feuds to create continuity- pro-wrestling fans love this.
- Build Tension: When possible, create a sense of suspense and anticipation. Leave the audience wanting more and wondering what will happen next.
4. Deliver Nonverbal Communication
- Project Your Voice: Speak clearly and confidently. Use your voice to convey emotion and emphasize key points.
- Use Body Language: Use your body language to reinforce your message. If you are in the ring doing a solo promo at an event that is being televised/streamed, make the hard camera your main focus- otherwise, make the crowd your main focus. Use gestures and move with purpose.
- Connect with the Crowd: When you speak and move, keep in mind that you want your words to be heard and actions to be seen by everyone in the crowd, from the people in the first row to those in the last row. For that reason -although the idea of it may sound strange- your body language and facial expressions must be exaggerated: This is how you can connect with everyone in the venue, no matter where they are sitting. In addition, acknowledge the audience and engage with them- respond to their reactions and use their energy to fuel your performance: If you're a face doing a promo and the fans boo, lean into it (a wrestler attempting to force a crowd to cheer is usually unsuccessful); If you're a heel doing a promo, telling the fans to shut up will make them boo more.
5. End with a Purpose
- Leave a Lasting Impression: End your promo with a memorable line, a dramatic action, or a cliffhanger.
- Create Additional Anticipation: Hype an upcoming match or continue a feud verbally.
Other Tips for Success
- Practice: Rehearse your promo until you feel comfortable and confident.
- Be Authentic: Always stay true to your character when given the opportunity to do so.
- Be Flexible: Be prepared to improvise and adapt in case the audience's reactions are not what is expected.
- Study: Watch wrestling promos done by wrestlers whom you admire and analyze what makes them effective.
By following these guidelines, you can craft compelling wrestling promos that captivate audiences and elevate your character to new heights.

WWE Legend John Cena Set to Star in New Netflix Comedy 'Little Brother'
17-time World Champion John Cena is once again proving that his presence extends far beyond the squared circle. Netflix has officially released the first trailer and details for its upcoming comedy film, Little Brother, which stars the WWE Legend alongside actor/comedian Eric André.
Scheduled to debut on Netflix on June 26, 2026, Little Brother will bring 1 hour and 38 minutes of chaotic energy to the streaming television service's summer movie lineup.
In Little Brother, John Cena plays Rudd, a famous, tightly wound real estate agent whose carefully curated, picture-perfect life gets an extreme makeover. The source of the madness is the sudden reappearance of his eccentric "little brother" Marcus, played by Eric André. With Michelle Monaghan starring alongside them as Rudd’s wife, the film puts the saying, "You can't say no to family", to the test.
Little Brother was directed by Matt Spicer, who also directed the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award-winning 2017 dark comedy Ingrid Goes West, and was written by Jarrad Paul & Andrew Mogel, the pair that wrote/directed 2015 film The D Train. Beyond John Cena, Eric André, and Michelle Monaghan, Little Brother features a cast that includes:
- Christopher Meloni (best known for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
- Ego Nwodim (best known for Saturday Night Live)
- Sherry Cola (Nobody Wants This)
- Caleb Hearon (The Devil Wears Prada 2)
The finale of John Cena's in-ring career took place in December 2025, but pro-wrestling fans continue to keep an eye on his Hollywood career. Just as fellow WWE Legends Dwayne Johnson and Dave Bautista have done, Cena has fully cemented himself as a success. And he especially stands out on the streaming platform route, with his action-comedy Freelance becoming a hit on Netflix, pulling in 4 million views (totaling 7.3 million hours viewed) in its first full week. Cena’s charisma and great promo skills destined him for Hollywood fortune.

Beyond Alba Fyre: The Market Value of Kay Lee Ray
The professional wrestling landscape changed significantly with the wave of WWE releases this past April. A release is not only an exit; it is a market resetting. When a top-tier asset hits the open market, it creates immediate speculation, anticipation, and forecasting. One of those premium assets on that market spent the last seven years under the WWE umbrella internationally- Kay Lee Ray.
You saw Kay Lee Ray become the longest-reigning NXT UK Women's Champion in history. You saw her set NXT ablaze as Alba Fyre. You saw her give in to her dark side while teaming with Isla Dawn in NXT as they became the final WWE NXT Women's Tag Team Champions and later on became WWE Women's Tag Team Champions. And you saw her pull duty as a member of the Secret Hervice. When all of that is combined with what Ray has accomplished outside of WWE, what the wrestling world has in store becomes clearer, wherever she lands next.
The UK Independent Scene
Years before being a member of WWE's developmental system, Kay Lee Ray began her career on the UK independent scene, where she captured many championships. Ray is a 3-time former Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) Women's World Champion (with her first reign being the sixth-longest in the championship's history), a former EVE Champion, and she became the first WOS Women's Champion.
Japan
Early in her career, Kay Lee Ray wrestled in Japan for JWP and Gatoh Move Pro Wrestling from 2012 to 2013, and STARDOM from 2016 to 2018. These experiences enhanced her aggressiveness and technical skills.
The US
Kay Lee Ray first began wrestling in the US in 2014, and worked for SHIMMER, SHINE, and ZERO1 USA. She also appeared in TNA three times for TNA British Boot Camp, a reality program which featured UK-based talents competing for a TNA contract.
In 2015, Kay Lee Ray made her first appearance in NXT and later participated in WWE Mae Young Classic 2017, signing her first contract with WWE two years later.
All of Kay Lee Ray's accomplishments brought her to that point, acknowledging her status as an international star.
With Kay Lee Ray now on the next chapter of her career, there are many places where she fits into the current wrestling ecosystem globally:
Because Kay Lee Ray is familiar with being in the ring with a wide range of pro-wrestling styles from all over the world, there are many wrestlers in Tony Khan’s women’s divisions in AEW who she could adapt to and have matches with that would entertain fans, such as technically-gifted wrestlers like Serena Deeb and Deonna Purrazzo, and Mina Shirakawa with her hybrid Japanese/American style.
When Kay Lee Ray was in TNA in 2014, she was as a pro-wrestler earlier in her career, trying to get an opportunity. If she returned to TNA now, it would be as one of the biggest names on the Knockouts roster, who could have matches with fellow veterans like Ash By Elegance or newer generation wrestlers like Elayna Black
Kay Lee Ray has evolved since her time in STARDOM. Most of the time that she was there was a developmental learning experience for her, as she was expanding her craft and coming into her own. If Ray were to return to STARDOM at this point in her career, it would be as a seasoned veteran who could have matches with current top STARDOM wrestlers, including Saya Kamitani, Starlight Kid, and AZM.
A 3-time holder of the ICW Women's World Championship, Kay Lee Ray's roots run deep in the promotion. If she decides to return to the UK wrestling scene, ICW would be a natural landing spot for a homecoming and would take its women's division to another level.
Another UK-based promotion that Kay Lee Ray has a history with, Pro-Wrestling: EVE, began teasing a mystery appearance not long after she was released from WWE, which has caused many fans to believe that the former EVE Champion will be returning to the promotion. EVE was one of the promotions that Ray wrestled in the most while she was on the UK independent wrestling scene, so it's a strong possibility.
Alba Fyre provided television exposure, and now the world-class level Kay Lee Ray is back on the market. It will be very interesting to see what happens next.
